Privacy policy

Margin is a small independent publication. It collects as little as it can: no ads, no tracking cookies, no selling or sharing of anyone’s data. This page lists everything that does happen.

Visitor statistics

The site uses Vercel Web Analytics to count visits. It records the page, the referring site, the country, and the device and browser type, and nothing that identifies you. It sets no cookies. Visitors are told apart for a single day by a hash of the request, which is discarded after 24 hours. No IP address is stored.

The newsletter

If you subscribe, your email address is sent to beehiiv, the service that stores the list and sends the emails. You confirm the subscription by email first, and every issue has an unsubscribe link.

beehiiv records whether an email was opened or a link clicked. Margin only ever looks at the totals (open and click rates), never at what one person did. Your address is kept until you unsubscribe or ask for it to be deleted.

YouTube videos

Article pages show a video thumbnail served by this site. Nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press play. Then the player loads from youtube-nocookie.com, and Google’s privacy policy applies to that player.

Cookies and local storage

Readers get no cookies. If you switch between light and dark mode, that choice is saved in your own browser (local storage) and never sent anywhere.

Hosting

The site is hosted by Vercel. Like any web server, it may briefly keep standard request logs, including IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running.

Google account data

The site has a private admin panel that only Margin’s owner can sign in to. With the owner’s permission, it reads the Margin YouTube channel’s own statistics through the YouTube Data API and the YouTube Analytics API, with read-only access. It never asks any visitor to sign in with Google.

That data is shown only to the channel owner inside the panel. It is kept in memory for a few minutes at most, and is not stored, sold, shared, or used for advertising. Margin’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Access can be revoked at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.

Your rights and contact

You can ask what data Margin holds about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted. In practice, that is your newsletter address. To ask, reply to any newsletter email or write via the Margin YouTube channel.
